Bookshelf Classics is an online bookstore located a stone's throw from Washington Square Park, with focus on collectible and out-of-print photography and fashion books as well as fashion magazines that we believe will be welcome additions to one's collection.
For the past forty (40) years we have resided in not only New York's most glamorous and celebrated area, the center of the literary, artistic and intellectually liberal life that is Greenwich Village, but in a building whose tenant was the storied Hotel Lafayette. It was here that Caruso, Nordica, and Melba were habitués in the Gay Nineties. Flo Ziegfeld was a constant guest and usually escorted a Follies beauty. Victor Herbert, Sarah Bernhardt, and the great yachtsman Sir Thomas Lipton often dined here. Paderewski had a favorite seat at one of the little marble tables at the front window.
When Mark Twain entertained Robert Lewis Stevenson, he brought him to the Lafayette. Stanford White, the great architect who designed the Washington Arch, dined here the night he was assassinated on the roof of his most famous architectural creation, (old) Madison Square Garden. Other familiar figures that graced this popular establishment were Al Smith, Wendel Wilkie, Eva LaGallienne, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Eugene O'Neill, John Dos Passos, John Sloane and Eleanor Roosevelt.
If only the walls could talk!!!
Photography is an art form consisting of imagination and creativity that capture's and expresses one's emotion, passion and sensuality of the moment. Photography is poetry - it is life!
We at Bookshelf Classics are not only booksellers, but lifelong New Yorkers and collectors of New York (street photography) photo books by and about Berenice Abbott, Helen Levitt, Elliott Erwitt and other noted and talented photographers, whose works have spanned the decades of our lifetime and awakened those happy memories (sometimes sad) that have been tucked away in the recesses of our mind, enabling us to once again rekindle structures, places and events that have long disappeared but are part of our soul
